The Philippines

The Philippines participated, along with other educators and nutritionists from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal and Sri Lanka, in the Inter-Country Workshop on "Feeding Minds Fighting Hunger (FMFH)'' organized by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO), through its Associated School Project Network (ASPnet). The workshop was held in Hyderabad, India at the National Institute of Nutrition between 27-29 August, 2002.

The aim of the workshop was to evaluate the relevance, appropriateness and usefulness of the FMFH materials for Asian countries, examine ways to introduce and promote the FMFH lessons into schools and curricula in each of the participating countries, and to develop proposals for World Food Day activities based on FMFH issues. Each of the participating countries developed a plan of action for implementing the FMFH initiative.

In order to promote FMFH in The Philippines, a number of initiatives have been suggested, including: using the lessons in ASPnet schools; forming a national committee for FMFH; seeking the support of authorities; increasing awareness and observance of World Food Day (16 October) in as many schools as possible; integrating FMFH into relevant national events; organizing workshops and teacher training; organizing essay and poster competitions for teachers and students; preparing editorial and feature articles in order to sensitize the media on the FMFH initiative.
